While working on some other projects, I found I could really use a laser cutter, so I started searching around... there are a few shop-rental type places around here, but after calculating how much time/cost my little project was going to run, it made sense to see about purchasing one. Surprise, surprise, laser cutters aren't cheap. True surprise: you can get a really excellent laser cutter with a large working surface for a decent price... if you're willing to do the work.
After searching for a good bit, the cheapest non-kit laser cutter I found ran a couple thousand dollars for a 9-inch by some-odd work surface, or, not very helpful for me. Good-sized work surfaces jack the price up by a good bit, so I went with the blackTooth laser cutter, a kit that includes everything you need, if you're willing to build it.
